Block chains are distributed, decentralized, and unmanageable data-storage technologies that allow for secure, transparent, efficient transmission and sharing of data. The characteristics of block chains give them a wide range of applications in the financial field, such as payment settlements, cross-border remittances, supply chain finance, digital money, smart contracts, etc. This paper will analyse the financial applications of several block chains and explore their advantages, challenges and future development.

支付结算是金融领域中最基础也最重要的功能之一,它涉及到资金的流动和交换。传统的支付结算系统通常需要通过中介机构,如银行、清算所、支付平台等,来完成资金的转账和确认。这些中介机构不仅增加了成本和时间,也增加了风险和不透明度。区块链技术可以提供一种点对点的支付结算方案,无需依赖任何中介机构,直接在参与者之间建立信任和共识,实现资金的快速、低成本、安全的转移和清算。

Payments settlements are one of the most basic and important functions in the financial field, involving the movement and exchange of funds. Traditional payment settlements usually require the transfer and recognition of funds through intermediaries, such as banks, clearing houses, payment platforms, etc. These intermediaries not only increase costs and time, but also increase risks and lack of transparency.

一个典型的区块链支付结算的应用案例是SWIFT和R3的合作项目。SWIFT是全球最大的跨境支付网络,每天处理超过3000亿美元的交易。R3是一家区块链软件公司,开发了基于区块链的贸易金融平台Corda。SWIFT和R3的合作项目旨在利用区块链技术,实现SWIFT的全球支付创新计划(gpi)和Corda的无缝对接,提高跨境支付的速度、透明度和可追溯性。通过这个项目,SWIFT的gpi客户可以通过Corda平台,直接访问区块链上的贸易金融数据,实现支付和交易的自动匹配和确认,从而加快支付结算的流程,降低成本和风险。

A typical example of the application of block chain payments settlement is the SWIFT and R3 collaborative project. SWIFT is the largest cross-border payment network worldwide, processing transactions of over $300 billion a day. R3 is a block chain software company that has developed a block chain-based trade finance platform, Corda. SWIFT and R3 collaborative projects are designed to use block chain technology to achieve seamless interfaces between SWIFT’s global payment innovation scheme (gpi) and Corda, and to improve the speed, transparency and traceability of cross-border payments. Through this project, SWIFT’s gpi clients can directly access trade finance data on the block chain through the Corda platform to achieve automatic matching and confirmation of payments and transactions, thereby accelerating the process of settlement and reducing costs and risks.

Cross-border remittances refer to the transfer of funds from one country or region to another, which is an important component of globalization and migration. According to the World Bank, global cross-border remittances amounted to $554 billion in 2019, of which developing countries accounted for 77 per cent. However, traditional cross-border remittance systems face problems such as high transaction costs, complex processes, long delays, inefficient regulation.

A typical example of the application of block chains for cross-border remittances is Stellar and IBM cooperation. Stellar is an open-source payment network based on block chains that supports the conversion and transaction of various types of French and digital currencies. IBM is a leading global technology company that has introduced a cross-border payment service based on the Stellar network, IBM Blockchai World Wire. IBM Blockchain World Wire can allow financial institutions to issue and manage their own stable currency on the Stellar network, or use stellar’s original digital currency, Lumens, as an intermediary currency, to achieve real-time, low-cost, credible cross-border remittances between different French currencies.

供应链金融是指基于供应链上的商品或服务的交易,为供应链上的参与者提供资金支持的一种金融服务。供应链金融的目的是为了解决供应链上的资金周转问题,提高供应链的效率和竞争力。传统的供应链金融系统存在着信息不对称、信任缺失、资金滞留、风险难控等问题,导致供应链金融的成本高、效率低、覆盖面小。区块链技术可以提供一种优化的供应链金融方案,利用区块链的不可篡改、共享账本、智能合约等特性,实现供应链上的数据的安全、透明、高效的记录和共享,为供应链金融提供可信的基础,降低成本,提高效率,扩大覆盖面。

Supply chain finance refers to transactions based on goods or services in the supply chain, a financial service that provides financial support to participants in the supply chain. The purpose of supply chain finance is to address liquidity problems in the supply chain and to improve its efficiency and competitiveness. Traditional supply chain financial systems have information asymmetries, lack of trust, financial stagnation, and risk management difficulties, which lead to high cost, inefficiency and low coverage of supply chain finance. Block-chain technology can provide an optimal supply chain finance programme that takes advantage of the immeasurable nature of block chains, shared books, smart contracts, etc., to achieve security, transparency, efficient recording and sharing of data in the supply chain, providing a credible basis for supply chain finance, reducing costs, improving efficiency and increasing coverage.
