On 1 January, the Japanese police arrested Mark Karpple, former Chief Executive Officer of Mt. Gox, the largest trading platform in Bitcoin, on suspicion that he was involved in a series of commercial frauds.
According to the Tokyo Police Department, Karpple was suspected of having “unauthorized” access to the Mt.Gox computer system in February 2013, which enabled his cash account to increase by about $1 million through data manipulation.
Television footage shows that Kalpleu was taken from his home by the police the same morning wearing a blue T-shirt with the words “French without effort”, wearing a baseball cap and not responding to questions from the media.
Upon conviction, the Frenchman, currently 30 years of age, is liable to imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 500,000 yen (US$ 4,000).
Some Japanese media reported that the police might also be investigating whether Calpple had used similar means to add money to his bitcoin account, and whether he had been involved in the loss of bitcoin, which had previously been sensationalized. The police suspected that he had transferred bitcoin from his user account to his own name on several occasions to make speculative transactions. The police believed that only Karpler had the ability to cut into the company’s computer servers.
Mt. Gox announced on 28 February 2014 that 850,000 bits of bitcoins had been stolen from the trading platform, including about 750,000 bitcoins from the user trading account and about 100,000 bitcoins from the company's own account, and that the business had applied to the Tokyo District Court of Japan for bankruptcy protection. According to the exchange rate at that time, about $467 million had been lost.
According to the enterprise, the theft of Bitcoin was the result of a systemic defect and hacking attack that supported the Bitcoin software algorithm.
It is not clear, for the time being, whether there will be more criminal charges against Calpleu by the police.
Bitcoin was proposed by a person who is known as “Middle-Hear” and was born in 2009. Unlike the current currency, this “hacker currency” is “generated” by computer mathematics, which allows computer hardware to be used for “mining” and is “mobilized” by means of a peer network (P2P).
It has a total design of 21 million and the difficulty of “mining” is gradually increasing, with a ceiling expected to be reached by 2140.
After the birth of Bitcoin, a number of speculators intervened to cause significant price fluctuations in bitcoin. The “market value” of a bitcoin once amounted to $1,200, but its price fell sharply after Mt. Gox applied for bankruptcy protection. The latest “exchange rate” was about $280 for a bitcoin.
At this stage, there is no formal recognition of Bitcoin by any country or region. There is still no consensus on whether to recognize bitcoin as a currency and allow it to circulate. It is not part of the banking system, nor is there a central authority to issue it. Some countries therefore have a neutral attitude towards this currency, for example, when United States federal government regulators say that virtual money can be used “lawfully” and German regulators treat bitcoin as a “recording unit”.
For the Bitcoin holders who suffered losses as a result of Mt. Gox, it seems more relevant to know the whereabouts of the lost bitcoin and to recover the loss.
